Che Guerrero: A Temporary Summit

When Wasted Robot Records called me again, to ask if I’d come out for another album recording, I was excited… but when I found out that the album was a 2-night recording at Punch Line Philly, I was completely floored. It’s a great room for comedy, and they’ve made some wonderful improvements to the place, so that it sounds excellent! What excited me even more was the fact that the next artist, Che Guerrero, had specifically said that he loved the sound of Michael Brooks’ album “Watch This”, from the previous year (which happened to be recorded by me)… So, it turns out that that was his target sound for his next record.

We set up two nights in July, and they both went beautifully. I’d never recorded at Punch Line Philly before, so I didn’t 100% know what to expect… but the room was so easy to work in! The house crew made it easy to get set up / sound-check / and load out after the show. They made us all feel right at home.

We planned on recording, more or less, the same show during each of the two nights, so that we’d have the opportunity to make edits, if needed… but the second night’s performance was just so completely electric, that the entire album is just that second night. We did keep one bit from the first evening’s performance, and that appears as the “Bonus Track” on the album.

The shows were fantastic, with great openers and a wonderful crowd / the process of finalizing the record went really quickly, and we had the final version approved ~4-6wks after the shows were recorded. I even snagged a couple of great photos, back-stage, during the shows.
